On 22nd April, Earth Day 2024 was celebrated by our schools as a day of action, engagement, and awareness.
As a global education group that aspires to be a leader in pioneering education for a sustainable future, EiM aims to create the changemakers of tomorrow by inspiring generations of learners to Live Worldwise.
Across our family of schools, Earth Day is a chance to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and global citizenship. We develop, measure and maintain sustainable practices within operations across our group, as something that happens not just on Earth Day, but every day.
In recent years, we have made a commitment to sustainability by sourcing fairtrade coffee, eliminating single-use plastics and encouraging the use of reusable containers with discounts. Our initiatives also support innovative projects such as fabric recycling and the creation of sustainable products. In addition, we promote sustainable food choices, and our PE jerseys are made from recycled plastic bottles, reflecting our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.
For Earth Day 2024, with the theme "Planet vs. Plastics," our schools worked to highlight the critical need to reduce global plastic production by 60%, from the current level of 380 million tonnes per year, by 2040. The initiative went beyond reducing plastic use, emphasising global citizenship and encouraging action to make the planet a better place for everyone.
"Sustainability is part of our identity. We want to be authentic, passionate, and committed to the cause. We want Earth Day to go beyond the simple acts of turning off the lights, recycling or using less plastic." Fraser said.
Throughout Earth Day week, the entire community from students and staff at our schools and headquarters contributed examples on how they think and action sustainability and global citizenship in their work and life. In each school, students, teachers and staff reflected on the meaning of Earth Day and how they could implement sustainability and global citizenship in their daily lives. Their reflections, ambitions and contributions were collected through the online bank and transformed into artefacts by each school's Global Citizenship Leader.
These examples and artefacts will form a bank of contributions that will inform this year’s EiM Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) report, creating a new groundbreaking model for authentic, meaningful, and personalised ESG documentation from the bottom up. The EiM ESG report, due to be released this summer, will showcase the power and collective impact of individual actions made possible through the strength of our community.
