Every year, Dulwich College International hosts the Diversity Arts Series. The series brings world class practitioners together to facilitate workshops and master classes with our students.
This year, we welcomed Roy McGrath and his jazz band from Chicago as part of our Diversity series. Roy McGrath, a Chicago based tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader, has led international tours to Mexico, Singapore, Korea and China.
During their time at each school, Roy and his group worked closely with our students on their compositions, performance techniques and improvisation, and gave tips and advice to our students about jazz musicianship. All the students enjoyed their time and lessons with the jazz band and learned a lot from this experience.
Student Jason R reflected on this fantastic opportunity: “Talking with Roy during the workshop helped me a lot, especially with approaches I can take when learning a song and trying to improvise over it. I also had the pleasure of recording one of my compositions with Roy's band and the process of getting constant feedback from the band members really made me develop my skills as a composer.”
